-

MFA Thesis by Asma Derouiche

The aim of Asma Derouiche project is to preserve Qatari cultural heritage through the use of local resources and innovative methods of collaborative production between local artisans and designers - in this project I'm one of the designers.

In doing so her study is exploring new or alternative authentic cultural artifacts in Qatar and celebrating the diversity of the Qatari products where in both local designers and artisans contribute to its diversity.

As she is underlining "As a cultural production hub this research-project seeks to facilitate valued collaborations between artisans and designers. The principle aims of which will be to highlight local craft, the role of artisans, and the relationship between artisans and designers in the Qatari context.

This could potentially result in helping to create a community of local designers and provide a database of local artisans, processes, materials.
The initiative is a contribution to the shaping of a contemporary cultural brand and identity of Qatar.

In exploring the design possibilities I have been paired with a ceramist Samah. Samah come from Egypt and he has a tiny shop in Souq Waquif, the oldest and most popular souq in town.
