Ismail Azzam: For Them -
An Artist's Trubute

The exhibition in Katara Gallery Doha - 26 April to 31 August 2015 - was featuring a selection of striking and emotive charcoal portraits, celebrating and honouring the work of 15 past masters.

Though Azzam uses oil and watercolour in his artworks, he is particularly highly regarded for his mastery of the distinctive technique known as ‘reverse charcoal drawing’.

During this process, the whole canvas is first covered in charcoal, then slowly etched away using a rubber to accentuate contrasting shades of light and dark and create a range of dramatic effects. “Portaits” and his  distinctive technique of  ‘reverse charcoal drawing’ have been the key words that have inspired the merch collection:  a notebook for portraits only with the translucent paper alternate with white pages with light grey marks of the face proportion and a charcoal pen set in a translucent envelope.
