Designed for disassembly and portability, the collection will be exhibited next in the VCUarts Qatar Gallery in Doha, suspended from motorized pulleys and equipped with laser range finders to create an interactive, kinetic installation, subtly shifting and rearranging—rising and falling, dimming and growing brighter in response to the passage of time and the presence and movement of gallery visitors. Inspired by virga cloud formations—clouds found in hot climates, characterized by trailing streaks of rain that evaporate before reaching the ground—the project invites free association, fosters reverie, and inspires imaginative speculation. Each cloud form was designed by a separate student or faculty member from the VCUarts Qatar MFA in Design program, in preparation for the 8-day wood-bending workshop at Atelier La Juntana, a teaching and fabrication facility on the north coast of Spain. During the workshop, thin, paired strips of wood, cut from locally sourced ash trees, were trimmed to size, sanded, soaked overnight in water, heated for several hours in a steam chamber, and then bent into digitally-fabricated molds. When assembled, the bent-wood curves create a family of related but distinct forms, each lit by a custom-fabricated LED light source, made-to-order by UK lighting and signage firm Applelec. Each individually tailored fabric diffuser obscures the light source and scatters the light, resulting in the collection of softly glowing cloud forms. “Exploring the steam bending process to push the boundaries of the material in pursuit of expressive geometry has been challenging but very rewarding,” according to the designers. Each installation explores the tension between heritage and innovation, merging traditional practices with emerging technologies. Themes such as material transformation, environmental awareness, and cultural memory shape the nine featured projects. Among them is Nature’s Alchemy. Nature’s Alchemy is an art installation that explores the deep connection between nature, tradition, and transformation through the date palm. Using harvested fronds, seeds, and stems, the project honors the tree’s role in spiritual stories, sustainable living, and ancestral knowledge. Through slow, mindful processes like collecting, sorting, and electroforming, natural materials are preserved and elevated—turning everyday elements into symbols of resilience and care. Inspired by lunar cycles and Islamic patterns, the final work is both poetic and precise: a quiet space where nature becomes teacher, and the ordinary reveals its sacred power. More Infor here. Starting from a simple brass sheet, each student is given a set of four schematic templates defining a flat, donut-shaped bangle. The band, limited to a 1 cm width, becomes a controlled space for exploration: a surface to be cut, opened, and reinterpreted. Rather than designing from scratch, students begin within constraint. The provided patterns act as a structure — a rhythm to follow, resist, or transform. Once selected, each template is redrawn, adapted, and translated into metal through careful sawing, followed by extensive filing and finishing. The repetition of the circular form shifts the focus away from invention and toward precision, control, and attention to detail. Each cut becomes a decision; each imperfection, a lesson. What emerges is a series of bangles that share a common starting point, yet reveal individual approaches to pattern, density, and interpretation. Each octagonalunit represents one gate, symbolizing a spiritual passage toward beauty, harmony, and transcendence. The necklace can be expanded by adding new octagons, allowing it to grow over time like a living geometry. Made through cut metalwork, it draws on the language of ornament to express both spiritual and material reflection. As a wearable form, it bridges body and architecture, turning sacred geometry into an intimate adornment. Encased in a hand-carved wooden box, the "hair braiding kit" includes a comb, a custom paranda, and copper and gold charms. Each generation adds a charm while braiding their daughter's hair, transforming the kit into a living archive. As copper oxidizes, it marks time and ancestry. Traditionally ornate and made of jade or gold, these rings gain new meaning during Pakistan's Basant festival, where kite strings can be sharp and dangerous. Minimalist silver and leather rings protect fingers while enhancing grip. This contemporary design honors historical functionality while reviving cultural traditions.
